Your Personal Lunar Cycle

December 25th, 2013

A lunar cycle is when the Moon travels through all twelve signs. As the Moon travels through these signs, it makes various aspects to the Sun, and with them, enters into new phases. Each lunar phase has it’s own purpose, it’s own energy, and it’s own meaning.

The transit lunar cycle involves the transit Moon and the transit Sun. On a personal level, you also experience a progressed lunation cycle, which involves the progressed Sun and progressed Moon. The progressed lunation phases can last for a few years and have major impact on your life. To a lesser degree, you can also experience personal lunation cycles, involving the transit Sun and your natal Moon, or the transit Moon and your natal Sun.

Let’s review the lunar phases. The first lunar phase is the New Moon phase, and begins when the Sun and Moon are in the exact same position, or 0 degrees apart, called a conjunction. The New Moon phase is all about a new cycle beginning, and tends to have positive energy. The second lunar phase is the Crescent Moon phase, which begins when the Sun and Moon are at a 45 degree angle, called a semisquare aspect. The Crescent Moon phase is about planning, putting in more work on what you’ve begun during the New Moon phase, and getting through roadblocks.

The third lunar phase is the 2nd Quarter Moon phase, and it begins when the Sun and Moon are at a 90 degree angle, called a square aspect. During the 2nd Quarter Moon phase, you need to dedicate yourself to what you want despite not knowing everything you need to know yet. The Gibbous Moon phase comes next, and begins when the Sun nd Moon are at a 135 degree angle, called a sesquiquadrate aspect. How the Gibbous Moon phase goes usually depends on how the 2nd Quarter Moon phase went, so if the 2nd Quarter Moon phase was good, the Gibbous Moon phase will be too. If it doesn’t go well, you may have to make some adjustments and be flexible.

The fifth lunar phase is the Full Moon phase, when the Sun and Moon are exactly opposite one another, 180 degrees apart, called an opposition. Under the Full Moon phase, you reap what you sow, and are punished or rewarded for your behavior, decisions, and actions. After the Full Moon phase is the Disseminating Moon phase, which begins when the Sun and Moon are 225 degrees apart. It’s essentially another sesquiquadrate aspect. You need to learn from what came to pass during the Full Moon phase and see what changes you need to make for your future.

The seventh lunar phase is the 4th Quarter Moon phase, and it begins when the Sun and Moon are 270 degrees apart. It’s essentially another square aspect. Your focus shifts and you can struggle internally as you try to figure out what you want to do next. The eighth and final lunar phase is the Balsamic Moon phase, and it begins when the Sun and Moon are 315 degrees apart. It’s essentially another semisquare aspect. During the Balsamic Moon phase, you reflect, spend time alone, and let go, all in preparation for the start of a new lunation cycle.

In transit, with the transit Sun and Moon, everyone feels the effects of the lunation cycle in a subtle way. You can also feel it a little more when you involve your natal Sun or Moon. The transit Moon will give you a personal lunation cycle every month or so when it makes aspects to your natal Sun. The phases will last around 3 ½ days each. The transit Sun will give you a personal lunation cycle every year or so when it makes aspects to your natal Moon. The phases will last around 1 ½ months each. They’ll impact you most when you have the same phases going on at the same time. For example, I recently entered the Gibbous Moon phase with the transit Sun 135 degrees from my natal Moon, and was also in the Gibbous Moon phase with the transit Moon 135 degrees from my natal Sun. I had to make several big adjustments to what I was doing during those few days. Go through your chart and see how your personal lunar phases have impacted you.
