Critical degrees are points in each sign that are more sensitive, and they can be used for change, growth, intense encounters, or challenging experiences. The critical degrees are:
0, 13, 26 degrees Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
8-9, 21-22 degrees Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
4, 17 degrees Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces
You can also consider 29 degrees of any sign, the Anaretic degree, a critical degree. With your progressed planets, they travel through the signs as you get older, and when they’re at critical degrees, you often experience an important period in your life. When a progressed planet is at 29 degrees, it’s at the end of the sign, gearing up for a new one, so change is inevitable, and you can feel that you have to do something and you have to do it right now. This will be especially important when you have a planet at 29 degrees Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces, because the very next degree will also be critical and in a new sign at 0 degrees Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn.
Your progressed Sun spends about one year in one degree, so it’ll spend about one year at a critical degree. During that year, you can have a hard time getting where you thought wanted to go, and feel that you have to find a new direction, path, or purpose in life. Things you never thought of doing before, you can suddenly have the chance to do now. It’s more about you and less about others, so there can be difficulty engaging with the people in your life.
Your progressed Moon spends about one month in one degree, so it’ll spend about one month at a critical degree. During that month, you’re more in touch with your feelings, and if you’ve been ignoring them, something can happen that forces you to face them. You can share your feelings with others, and make emotional realizations.
Your progressed Mercury spends almost one year in one degree, so it’ll spend almost one year at a critical degree. During that time, you can suddenly become clear about what it is you have to do, what facts you’re missing, what plans you need to make, and a big idea can come to you. You keep busy and have plenty of energy for all that you want to do.
Your progressed Venus spends about one year in one degree, so like the Sun, it’ll spend about one year at a critical degree. During that year, you can forge better relationships and end unhealthy ones. You can embrace your creative self, and make new things happen for you. You know what it’ll take to be happy with your life, and work toward that.
Your progressed Mars spends about two years in one degree, so it’ll spend about two years at a critical degree. During those two years, you may have felt like you were working yourself ragged and getting nowhere, and everything just starts to finally come together. You have greater confidence, are assertive, and get help from others.
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are slow planets, so they don’t move fast enough to enter into major new degrees. The exception will be if you have any of these planets at the very beginning of a sign (around 0 degrees) and they retrograde backward in your progressed chart to 29 degrees and a different sign, or if you have any of these planets at the very end (around 29 degrees) and retrograde, and they go direct in your progressed chart and move forward to 0 degrees and a new sign. That’ll be significant for you, and a time for major change and growth. Remember to take into consideration the signs involved and the houses these degrees are in to see exactly what areas of life will be impacted.

Dear Nic
I was born 9.17am 28 June 1962. British summer time. CEO of a small children’s mental health charity in Liverpool England. My progressed Mars is in 29th degree of Gemini cusp of my 10-11th house is 26 Gemini. My progressed sun is 28 Leo conjunct natal Uranus. My heart is heavy with worry as I encounter fierce and unethical competition from local charities – really disgraceful gossip and sabotage – from people who are supposedly ‘values driven’.
My Astrologer tells me to persevere and that I have an Apollonian mission. It is difficult to sit at meetings with such people when my default behaviour is to walk away – I am very uncomfortable with conflict, but I have a responsibility to the charity I lead and at the moment I don’t quite know what to do for the best ? Challenge these people or walk away?
An amateur in Astrology – any insight you can offer would be received with heartfelt gratitude.
With kind regards. Tony x
Hi Tony, sorry to hear what you’re dealing with! With your progressed Mars, the deal is if you’re someone who normally avoids conflict, a critical or anaretic Mars will force you to become more assertive by putting you in situations of conflict, so that’s what’s happening here. Walking away absolutely is NOT what you should do – Mars would be very mad at that! I recently had my own progressed Mars anaretic as well (in Virgo), and like you, am the nonconfrontational type, so it was a lesson I had to learn too (still am actually since my progressed Mars is still critical at 0 degrees Libra). So stand up for yourself, your work, your charity, and what you believe in. You don’t want to be aggressive (that’s bad Mars), but assertive (good Mars), which is often something lacking in those of us who avoid conflict. Given this is in Gemini, it would seem to be a war of words and ideas that you’re waging (so the gossip and sabotage make sense). And I’m sure you know that the 11th house and Uranus both rule charities. Your progressed Sun conjunct natal Uranus brings more focus, and makes it feel more personal, and in Leo, it feels like it’s going after something you’re so invested in and proud of. The 11th house and Uranus also rule change and doing things in a different way, going outside of your comfort zone, so this is also pushing you to push past your discomfort with conflict. Stand your ground and fight on; using Gemini and Leo positively, outsmart them, don’t stoop to their childish level, focus on the facts, have a positive attitude, and let your best attributes and the best attributes of your charity shine and keep pointing them out. Good luck! – Nic
