Interesting properties of Planet Venus

 In astrology, whether Western or Eastern, the planet Venus is known for beauty, art, culture, romance, marital aspects, the stage of life corresponding to youth, comfort, and entertainment.  It is much closer to the Sun than to the Earth.  It is never more than 48 degrees from the Sun when viewed from the Earth.  In the twelve signs of zodiac, it has the ownership of signs Taurus and Libra.  It is exalted in sign Pisces suggesting that its significations are very important.  It debilitates in sign Virgo meaning that in general, its significations express with impediments.  These features of Venus are widely known in a day to day predictive astrology.  But there is more about planet Venus, which readers of astrology should know.  “The many faces of the planet Venus in ancient myth and religion“, a book by Ev Cochrane, highlights many other aspects of planet Venus.

Planet Venus in Mythology and Religion

    Here, a view has been expressed that what the astronomers describe about planet Venus is at variance with the description of mythological and religious rituals.  Sacred traditions from different corners of the globe suggest that Venus only recently moved on to a new orbit, cavorting with Mars and raining fire from heaven.  While astronomers may perhaps be not in agreement with such revelations, the astrologers seem to be catching up impliedly somewhere with the traditional intent.  It is true that a close unanimity of modern astrologers with the traditional religious content may not be achievable,  but a more liberal interpretation may bring them closer. Mars seem to have come to a particular angular or close range in the solar system with the Venus.  It is a normal phenomenon that when Mars and Venus are together,  they generate a kind of fire or whip up passions  disturbing the significations of Venus.

Sumerian literature describes the planet Venus as goddess, singing hymns making the heavens tremble and causing earthquakes and lightening.  The planet Venus is also a disaster-bringer in Mesoamerica cultures.  That content about planet Venus is nowhere to be found in modern astrology. On the other hand one has to know that prayers in religions or ancient worshiping systems do contain high sounding praises about the goddess Venus.  This is normal.  One has to find out the implied or suggested meaning instead of word for word meaning.  Once this is done, the modern astrologer may find the content fitting  into his or her knowledge to a considerable  extent.

In conclusion, it can be said that one must not forget that descriptions of traditional religions mythology and astronomy have got to be in tune with their professed roles.  Astrologers would be required to tailor the information provided by these two in consonance with their own role.  In this writer’s opinion, the three organs of study are complimentary though variations in description, and should be interpreted with an open mind.
