Astrological Inheritance in John Lennon’s Family

Yoko Ono’s viral music video, “Bad Dancer,” caused me to wonder about the astrology of the Lennon family. I discovered yet another fascinating example of astrological inheritance, as I call it. Both of John’s sons, Julian and Sean, took elements of their father’s chart.

Julian was born first. He is famously resentful of his father, and it’s easy to understand why. John neglected him pretty profoundly. First, he was disengaged when Julian was a small child, in large part due to the success of the Beatles. Later, he left to be with Yoko. Julian has Venus in Pisces and is therefore, extremely sensitive. His father’s coldness left such a scar on him that Julian didn’t want to start a family of his own for a long time.

Children often take the signs of their family members. Sometimes, a child will appear to take the signs of the parent or relative who is closest to them. Astrological traits held in common tend to help families get along better too. Despite Julian’s uncomfortable relationship with his father, he still took the man’s signs.

John was a Libra with Moon in Aquarius and an Aries Ascendant according to most popular natal charts for him. Julian, even with the abuse he sustained from his father, came into the world as an Aries with Moon in Libra. Both charts also show a Capricorn Midheaven. These elements are obvious nods to John.

Not surprisingly, Julian claims to have inherited some of the anger issues that his father had, which is easily mapped to Aries. But, he also has musical abilities, which are no doubt helped along by Libra. To hear Julian sing is eerie indeed because his voice bears an uncanny resemblance to his famous father’s. It is not surprising that Julian is specifically a talented vocalist because he has the other sign of Venus, Taurus, rising. Taurus rules the vocal chords, and if the Ascendant is like a person’s “book cover,” Julian’s voice is certainly one thing that people notice first about him.

What about mom? His mother, Cynthia, is a Virgo with Moon in Leo according to an online chart that did not have a birth time. Cynthia is very dedicated to her son and Julian is complimentary of her, but the two charts are quite different. Cynthia’s Venus in Virgo even opposes her son’s soft Venus in Pisces. This is an example of how a parent and a child with dissimilar charts can still get along quite well. The one obvious thing that could strengthen their relationship is Julian’s Sun in Aries, which is trine his mother’s Moon by sign. A nice Sun/Moon trine can make two people fast friends.

Sean is John’s son by Yoko. His chart is a reflection of his father, but also his mother. Since John and Yoko believed in astrology, I am sure that they must have felt elated when they saw Sean’s chart for the first time. Their son was born on John’s birthday, October 9. Even someone who is not into astrology can see this obvious tribute to his father. So, both John and Sean’s charts have Sun in Libra. The Sun points to masculinity and fatherhood. The sign of Libra is significant for Yoko’s chart as well as she has a Libra Ascendant. Libra gives them all artistic abilities and a well-known interest in peace efforts.

Sean acknowledges his mother through his Moon, a classic symbol of motherhood. Yoko and Sean both have Moon in Sagittarius. It’s sometimes easy to write these things off as coincidences, but I’d offer that both Moons are at 11 degrees, so this looks intentional and ordered. Further, when people have the same Moon sign, it means they are on a similar emotional wavelength. This synastry is a blessing for Yoko and Sean considering that John was assassinated. The Moon conjunction should foster a natural closeness.

It’s hard to miss that John and Yoko had an Aquarian bond: He had Moon in Aquarius and she is an Aquarius. The sons don’t have anything in Aquarius, and also have not enjoyed the same level of success in the arts. Perhaps the Aquarian ingenuity was the key to John and Yoko’s fame.

This is an interesting case study and shows how children take the signs of parents for a variety of reasons that may not always be easy to intuit.  While I consider Sean’s chart to be a traditional and expected reflection of his parents, Julian’s chart reflects his father too, in spite of a tumultuous relationship.
