In your natal chart, Jupiter shows the areas where you can expand easiest, and have a little bit of luck at times. You can go big, you can be more optimistic, and when you put in effort, even more good comes to you. But since Jupiter is the planet of expansion, you can see anything with the house and sign Jupiter is in expand, including the difficulties and the laziness. Jupiter is prone to laziness, feeling too good sometimes, so effort has to be made to get the ball rolling. He lacks the drive of Mars, Pluto, even Saturn. He likes things easy. But the upside of Jupiter can be high once you do find the drive.
In the natal chart, aside of laziness, Jupiter can also bring arrogance or a know-it-all attitude. This is mostly seen with conjunctions, squares, and oppositions to personal planets, and if there aren’t enough humbling aspects by Saturn or between personal planets, you can encounter someone who is quite full of themselves, a brat, or downright narcissistic.
Having Jupiter at a critical or anaretic degree, points of critical, crisis energy, can make your natal Jupiter more important in your chart, and challenge you to use Jupiter’s energy to your advantage. You can find that you expand too much or have too many avenues to pursue at times, and have no opportunities to speak of at other times. It can be uncomfortable for you to pursue opportunities and be optimistic, or you’re too optimistic and have too many big ideas.
Having Jupiter retrograde in your natal chart tends to matter only if Saturn isn’t. When that’s the case, you can be more realistic/pessimistic and cautious than optimistic and bold. When Jupiter is direct and Saturn retrograde, it can be reverse, and you’re too much of an optimist and take too many risks. When both are retrograde or direct, they flow normally. In transit, when Jupiter is retrograde, we can be lazier, too optimistic, and lack opportunity.
In transit, the house Jupiter is touring through can get a burst of Jupiter’s expansive, happy energy, and it’s easier for you to make the things happen that you want to happen, and create opportunities for yourself. It takes less effort on your part, and when you do put in effort, more good comes your way. Like in the natal chart, transit Jupiter can also breed laziness, and make you feel so good that you accomplish nothing.
One of the great things about transit Jupiter is that even when he’s making hard aspects (squares and oppositions), you can still make good things happen. While this is true of all the planets, it’s easiest with Jupiter. You have less resistance to deal with, so all transit aspects by Jupiter to your chart bring opportunity. You should take full advantage of any aspects made by transit Jupiter because of that. Transit Jupiter aspects last for about two weeks.
One particularly fruitful time can come with your Jupiter Return, when transit Jupiter returns to the exact position it was at when you were born. This occurs every 11-12 years. You can create a chart for the return and follow the aspects made to the return chart until the next return, and see how it triggers opportunities for expansion in your life.
