The Astrology of Adoption

Some people have biological children, while others choose to adopt. In a natal chart, there can be clues as to whether or not you’ll be more apt to adopting children. Adoption itself is ruled by the 11th house, and what you’ll usually see in a natal chart is importance of the 11th house/Uranus (planetary ruler of the 11th house)/Aquarius (sign of the 11th house) and Neptune/Pisces/12th house (Neptune is the planetary ruler of Pisces and the 12th house). When you adopt, you’re taking a child that isn’t biologically yours, that some could say you have no obligation to, and choosing to “save” them from being an orphan, a foster child, or simply being alone and unwanted. This is where the Neptune/Pisces/12th house comes in, because this trio wants to save everyone in the world, one at a time, and do it personally. I call it the bleeding heart! There’s also usually 5th house involvement, since the 5th house rules children.

Let’s go into some charts for celebrities who have adopted children. Angelina Jolie is pretty much always the first person that pops into your head when you think of celebrities and adoption, so we’ll start with her. Jolie has adopted 3 children, and she has her Sun and Mercury in her 11th house, the house of adoption. Her Neptune is located in her 5th house, the house of children. With Neptune in Sagittarius and her 5th house, that can show her children being from distant lands all around the world (and even her biological children weren’t born in the United States).

Sandra Bullock made news when she adopted a son in the midst of her divorce with her ex-husband. Bullock has her Moon (the planet ruling motherhood) in Aquarius. Uranus is located in her 4th house (the house of motherhood).

Sheryl Crow has 2 adopted sons. Her Uranus is in her 5th house, and she has a whopping 2 Aquarius stelliums, with Mercury, Mars, and Saturn conjunct in her 10th house, and the Sun, Venus, and Jupiter conjunct in her 11th house.

Mariska Hargitay has 2 adopted children, 1 boy and 1 girl. Her Sun, Mars, and Saturn are in Aquarius, and her Sun and Mars are in her 1st house of the self. Her Venus is in Pisces, and her Mercury is in her 12th house.

Nicole Kidman has two adopted children, one boy and one girl, with ex Tom Cruise. Kidman has Uranus in her 11th house and Mars in her 12th house. Neptune is in her 1st house, and Pisces is on her 5th house.

Michelle Pfeiffer has one adopted child, and she has Venus in Pisces on her 11th house cusp, a great combo for adoption. Her Mercury is in her 11th house, and her Sun is in her 12th house.

In transit, when you want to see if someone will be adopting in the near future, you want to look at aspects to their 11th house cusp, ruler, and planets in the 11th house. Also look at aspects to their 5th house of children. For women, you can also see some to the 4th house of motherhood. Pay attention to where Neptune and Uranus are transiting, specifically if they’re in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 11th, or 12th houses. If Jupiter is in the 4th, 5th, or 11th, that can also be beneficial; if Saturn or Pluto are in these houses, that can cause delays and complications.
